For Immediate Release
September 2001
New York—The RSG announces the public release of Carnivore, an installation artwork for the Net.
Inspired by the FBI software of the same name, Carnivore transforms surveillance data obtained via electronic wiretap into a vivid audio-visual experience.
Since no two data networks are alike, each installation of Carnivore takes on the personality of its location. In an office, Carnivore responds like a living organism to the motions of each worker; in a cybercafe, Carnivore follows the movements of each web surfer.
Viewers experience Carnivore via video projections, computer kiosks, and other interfaces. Each interface features a different window into the data stream, a different interpretation of our cybernetic landscape.
After recent terrorist attacks on the US, data surveillance is a daily reality for many Americans. How does this change the way we communicate? Carnivore tackles this difficult question head-on. Inverting conventional wisdom on data privacy, Carnivore takes the most dramatic step possible—full surveillance—creating a new form of public art for the Net.
Founded in 2000 by Alex Galloway, the RSG is an all-star
collective of computer artists, hand-selected from cities around the world. The
RSG specializes in many genres of contemporary computer art, such as interface
design and interactive environments. Carnivore is their first public
release.
